6.1 - Building Block Search

For the first of four search strategies I will practice using, I decided to do a building block search. The database I will do this search in is LibraryLit. The search I will conduct will be on "youth programs in public libraries". For the search i divided my topic into 3 facet sets: (youth or adolescent) and (program or event) and (library). The search found 346 results. I decided to try to narrow it a little bit more and changed my first set to (adolescent or teen). I was really surprised when that one word narrowed the results to 143. Using this search strategy was really easy to use after I understood how to build and use the facets for a search. I found some really interesting articles including:

The resource I choose was "101+ Teen Programs That Work (Teens @ the Library Series) (Teens the Library Series)" by RoseMary Honnold. The reason I picked this one is because it focuses on programs that the library can conduct for teens or youth. The tags along with the title state what this book is all about and that is attracting the youth to the library with things that interest them. This book is a guide to the children's or youth services department to programs that will work. Gaining teen usage and interest in the library year round is what this book will help provide.

4 - An RSS Feed

I added the RSS Feed produced by the Kenton County Public Library called KCPL Programs and Events.

http://www.kentonlibrary.org/events/xml/event.php?loc=0&ptype=3&kw=

I chose this as my RSS Feed because it is a feed that focuses on a public library. I am interested in public libraries and this Feed shows how the library interacts with the community they are a part of. The feed provides the programming events developed throughout the year for the community to enjoy and even categorizes them by age range such as Teen, Child, Adult, or general public. The different events provided are great ideas that I can learn from if or when I am organizing youth programs in the future.

3 - A Related Podcast

Using iTunes I searched for a podcast concerning public libraries and teen/youth programming. I selected the podcast below because it is from a public library focusing on teen programs that occur in the library throughout the year. Included in the podcast are things that occurs in the programs including advice teens have for the new librarians and live audio from past program events.
